The inside of your eyes not only tells us about your vision. It can highlight other health issues, like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cancer. Some tumours can even be detected through a simple but thorough eye exam.
In fact, we once had a young man, who came in to see us for a routine eye exam. He had an uncharacteristic bulge in the optic nerve at the back of his eye. We knew it could mean bad news, so we sent him straight to his doctors. Six weeks later he was recovering well – after an operation to remove a tumour from his brain. Of course, not all eye exams are as dramatic as that and yours is unlikely to be. But we want you to leave us confident you’ve had the best eye care that you can.
A permanent photographic record
Traditionally Optometrists would write notes and draw diagrams to record information whilst examining the eyes. The digital photo gives a permanent record which can be compared with other pictures taken later. This makes it much easier to detect small changes or health problems at an early stage. A picture is a far more detailed record than could ever be described in written words.
